Worldwide, plastic straws are the sixth most common type of litter, according to Litterati (an app that identifies and maps trash). They massively contribute to the problem of plastic pollution.

Did you know that 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year and straws are a major factor because the vast majority of them are not recycled. Research shows that, by weight, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050.

According to, around 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastic in their stomachs and if ingested, marine life has only a 50% chance of survival. Many of us have seen horrific YouTube videos of straws being removed from turtles’ noses and would agree that this cruelty has to be prevented. And it can be!

Plastic straws have been around for decades, taking over from paper straws in popularity in the 1960’s, and today it is thought that Britain uses around 8.5 billion of them a year. Education is crucial in reversing this statistic and having the use of plastic straws reduced and/or ultimately banned. The way forward is for us all to help the environment by introducing an alternative to the plastic straw and our compostable product fits the bill.

Our eco-friendly straws are a perfect alternative with only beneficial side effects! Be ahead of the game and do your bit for the planet – contact us with your requirements, or for advice about which of our non-plastic straws would suit your needs.
